Why WAGR karate?
At WAGR you will find an all round and exciting approach to fitness, self-defense and karate. With many different types of students there are many different benefits. Some students, particularly our young members, find large benefits from increased co-ordination. Some members find benefits from increased fitness and flexibility. Others enjoy the social aspect or the ability to feel comfortable in knowing they can defend themselves.
Self-Defence
A large number of people participate in Martial arts for self-defense. At WAGR we teach you to be confident in defending yourself in any situation, not just a specific situation, no matter what your built. Many instructors teach techniques ’if this happens’ or ‘that happens’ what if it is different? It more than likely will be. That is why WAGR teaches you to be flexible, to improvise and most of all feel confident.
Sport Karate
Sport karate is not a new phenomenon, the earliest karate pioneers competed in many kakedameshi (challenge matches). There are many historical documents stating masters like Miyagi Chojun, Motobu Choki, Mabuni Kenwa, Ohtsuka Hironori, and Chibana Chosin participated in kakedameshi. What has changed however is the safety involved. With the introduction of protective equipment and rules in regards to allowable techniques and contact, sport karate has become a popular part of the vast majority of karate around the world today. In fact it is primarily the reason why karate is so wide spread. Sport karate training is optional at WAGR, being taught by instructors that have themselves, successfully competed in many Local, State, National and International tournaments. We are fortunate to have some instructors to have competed for over a decade and have multiple Australian and West Australian Champions.
